Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to be banned in India?

Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to be banned in India?

So, In february of this year ,the it ministry had laid out a set of new IT rules . Now, these rules were meant for social media platforms and they had to accept these rules and comply with the rules within a period of three months. Now, that time period of three months ends on may 25th and none of the social media platforms Facebook,  Twitter, Instagram have complied with the new id rules. As a result, these sites may risk a ban in India.

What happens if they do not comply?

So, if Facebook, Instagram, Twitter do not comply with the new rules by may 25th. They will lose their position and protections as intermediaries, and they may face criminal charges under Indian law. Now while the three-month time period has already expired these U.S based companies had asked for a time period of six months as they were still waiting to hear from U.S headquarters.

What are the new IT rules?

So as for the new it rules these social media platforms need to appoint a compliance officer from India. If they need to function in India now this compliance officer will overlook complaints will monitor content and will remove content also. If it is found to be objectionable and these rules don't just apply to social media platforms these rules also apply to OTT platforms like Netflix, Amazon prime and the others so essentially. The government believes that these social media platforms lack a code of self-regulation, thus they want them to appoint members and representatives from other ministries in India to form a committee to oversee the content that is shared on them.

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Whatsapp could face a ban in India?

The social media giants could be banned over the new information technology rules. The new rules come into effect from may 26-2021 many popular platforms are reportedly yet to comply with the new regulations on may 25. Facebook said that, it aims to comply with the new rules only Indian microblogging App who has reportedly complied with the rules here are some points of what the new rules entail. These companies will have to appoint a chief compliance officer nodal contact person and a resident grievance officer the companies will also have to set up time-bound grievance redressal mechanisms and file monthly compliance reports. There is also a 24-hour time limit for removing content flagged for nudity if companies don't comply then they can lose their intermediary status in India. This status exempts them from liability for third party information and data on their platforms.
